Mississippi Historical Markers

Since 1949 the State Historical Marker program has identified and interpreted historic sites across Mississippi. More than one thousand markers can be found near buildings, battlefields, cemeteries, churches, temples, forts, homes, schools, and abandoned towns. For tourists the markers may be their only glimpses into the state’s rich and varied history. For Mississippi communities the markers can be points of pride that memorialize locally important people and events.

Carter-Calloway House

This Ocean Springs residence earned the nickname “Steamboat House” due to its unique shape. Its distinctly nautical architecture has warranted national recognition for the site.

Logtown

Now a southern Mississippi ghost town, the aptly named “Logtown” was ground zero for the historic Weston Lumber Company.

Temple Theatre in Meridian

The largest of its kind in Mississippi, the Temple Theatre opened in 1928. Its tenure as a community pillar has persisted through silent film into the modern age of cinema.

GM&O Freight Depot

Once the freight depot serving nearby railroads such as the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio, this building is now home to one of Jackson, Mississippi’s most iconic restaurants.
